THE SOLUTION
A solution for the disadvantage of students in lower socioeconomic status is educating teachers or instructors on this issue and how to handle the situation. Educators should not make any assumptions about a student, they should consider the student's needs and try to help them succeed rather than bringing them down. Films like Stand and Deliver (Ramón Menéndez, 1988) or Freedom Writers (LaGravenese, 2007), both based on true stories, display that this issue is evident in the school system. Focusing on the film Freedom Writers, Erin Grewell displays a strong and caring teacher who never gave up on her students. From her unique teaching methods, Mrs. Gruwell helps her students develop self-confidence and create goals for themselves. This film spreads awareness on the problem of the impact one's socioeconomic status has on their education quality. An individual who can not relate to or understand this socioeconomic issue in education can watch this movie as Freedom Writers educates viewers on the struggles that occur in a low-income school or area. From the course content, everyone learns in a different way, an individual that learns through visuals may understand this problem to a greater extent by watching a film, rather than reading articles or a novel.
If teachers are trained to handle the occurring issues in lower-income areas, rather than disposing of the scholars' capability, more students will graduate high school and set further goals for themself. Educating teachers on raising their expectations, and teaching with the student's needs first will result in creating a positive space for students to succeed.
